| July 12, 2000 Message from Interim President On June 23, the Board of Trustees appointed me to serve as
Interim President of Colorado School of Mines until the search for a permanent replacement
for President Bickart has been completed. That search process has begun and is anticipated to take from eight to twelve months. I am deeply honored to have been selected for this responsibility and grateful for the support of the Board, members of the Administration, the department heads and division directors, faculty members, staff, students, alumni and others. The School faces a number of serious challenges and dealing with these in the next year or so will not be easy. It will take the collective effort of all of us to move this Institution forward. The Board has asked that the office of Vice President for Academic Affairs and Dean of Faculty be left vacant during this transition period in the expectation that I will reassume those responsibilities under the next permanent president. Accordingly, we are in the process of analyzing the duties of both the Office of the President and the Office of Academic Affairs to find a structure and staffing plan that can work until a new president takes office. This may, for example, require the appointment of a second Associate Vice President for Academic Affairs or the equivalent, with a clear delineation of the duties and responsibilities of everyone in the respective Offices. The Department Heads and Division Directors will continue to report directly to me and will continue to be an essential part of the School's leadership during this time. I also plan to work closely with the Faculty Senate, the Administrative Faculty Council, the Classified Employees Advisory Council, and other campus bodies to ensure communications and continuity throughout the interim period. We will not spend the next year in a holding pattern - there are many important issues that cannot be ignored. We must continue to develop a collective Vision for Mines that will recognize our strengths as well as our potentials, our specialties as well as the connections among them, the uniqueness of the Mines Learning Community in terms of both its quality and its programs. We will need to move forward with continuous improvements in our undergraduates' educational experience, our graduate and professional outreach programs, non-academic opportunities for students, improvements in the infrastructure and physical plant, the development of intellectual-property and distance-learning opportunities, resource development, preparations for an accreditation visit, and many other tasks and initiatives. It will take the efforts of a united Mines community to achieve positive results in all of these endeavors. The bottom line is that we owe it to ourselves and to our students to make Mines all that it can be. This Institution can today make a significant difference in the World, as it has proven so often in the past; furthermore, a Mines education can prepare our students to build a better World in the future. Having such an impact is a daunting concept, but I believe that is why we are all here. Sharon and I are excited to be part of this worthwhile effort and will do our best in the coming months to justify the trust that has been placed in us. We look forward to working together with all of you to make this period rewarding and successful for everyone involved. |

2000 Interim President Appointed Dr. John U. Trefny, vice president for academic affairs and dean
of faculty, has been named interim president by the CSM Board of Trustees. In making the announcement today, CSM Board of Trustees President Frank Erisman stated: "Dr. Trefny was chosen to head the School for his leadership abilities in academics, research and the community. While serving as vice president, he led a successful endeavor to reform the Mines curriculum, an extensive effort which has been acknowledged by the Colorado Commission on Higher Education as a model for other educational institutions. We are confident that he can implement and advance many important initiatives in which the School is currently involved." He added, "John is respected and well liked both on campus and in the city of Golden. Residents of Golden, he and his wife Sharon have been dedicated members of the Jefferson Symphony Orchestra Board and have participated in many other civic activities. We know John will do a fine job maintaining good relations with the Golden community, the CSM alumni, the Colorado Legislature, and other friends of the School." Dr. Trefny has been a member of the CSM faculty since 1977. Named interim vice president for academic affairs and dean of faculty in 1995, he was formally appointed in June 1997. Trefny has won several teaching excellence awards, including the James R. Wailes Award by the Colorado Alliance for Science in recognition for his leadership in science, technology and mathematics education in 1997. He also received the Excellence in Science Teaching Award in 1992 from the Colorado Association of Science Teachers for his work in helping determine the needs of future graduates, leading to improvement in K-12 science education. Trefny served as head of the CSM Department of Physics from 1990 to 1995 and has authored over 75 technical publications on such topics as quantum mechanics, the thermal properties of organic materials, superconductivity, acoustics and direct energy conversion. He serves on the board of directors of Sigma Xi, the scientific research society. He holds a B.S. in physics from Fordham University and a Ph.D. in physics from Rutgers University. After a post-doctoral appointment at Cornell University, he taught at Wesleyan University before coming to Mines. In accepting the appointment, Dr. Trefny said, "I am deeply honored to have been selected as interim president and grateful for the support of the Board of Trustees and the campus. The School is in an excellent position for producing leaders in engineering, science and business who can make a difference in Colorado and the world. I look forward to working with my outstanding colleagues to maintain the excellence of this wonderful institution, as our Board conducts a world-wide search for our next president over the coming year." |

| May 11, 2000 President Theodore A. Bickart Announces Retirement President
Theodore A. Bickart announced his retirement today, effective July 31, 2000.Dr. Bickart stated he has met his goal of helping the School transition from a period of long-term stability in the fields of applied science and engineering to an era of rapidly changing technology, and he is looking forward to retirement. Dr. Bickart joined Mines on August 1, 1998, as the Schools 14th president. The CSM Board of Trustees plans to launch the search for a new president at its next meeting in a few weeks. Explosive growth in both the applied sciences and engineering is presenting many challenges for institutions of higher education such as Mines. Over the past two years, I have laid the groundwork for new partnerships and opportunities in the international arena to encourage more students to study abroad, as well as to enable faculty to interact with colleagues in other countries and thus stay at the leading edge of research worldwide, said Dr. Bickart. Leading an institution the caliber of Mines has been a wonderful opportunity. It gives me a sense of pride to have two prestigious institutions as bookends for my career, Johns Hopkins and Colorado School of Mines. Colorado is a wonderful place, and my wife Frani and I have enjoyed living here. We are also looking forward to spending more time with our family, as well as pursuing our other interests, Dr. Bickart continued. Frank Erisman, president of the CSM Board of Trustees, stated: We are grateful to Ted for all of his efforts to prepare Mines for the challenge of educating students during an era of rapid growth in knowledge and new trends in higher education. Among his accomplishments has been using his extensive international experience to prepare our students for success in the new global marketplace. He has also performed well in enhancing the cohesiveness of the Mines community, building bridges to the alumni and Golden community. We wish him well in his retirement. |
