| Prison Tunnel
Wows Administrators! The Associated Press FLORENCE, AZEven prison administrators admitted they were impressed by the tunnel dug by abortive escapees Richard Ford and Richard Lewellyn. "The talent it took to do that!" exclaimed one official at the Arizona State Prison here. "These guys could get a degree from the Colorado School of Mines!" Ford and Lewellyn were apprehended Monday night in their 60 foot long escape tunnel about four hours after they were discovered missing. The escape plan had been known to prison officials for several months. Prison officials looking at the tunnel yesterday marveled at the prisoners' thoroughness and care in the tunnel's design. The first entrance, located on the concrete floor of a storage shed, was a 13 inch square opening that dropped down into a one man cubbyhole. That entrance was covered with heavy machinery and a fresh layer of concrete when guards discovered it. Officials said the tunnel was wired for electricity and had plumbing and air compressors. The two inmates both maximum security prisoners, had only 30 feet to go when they were discovered Monday night. Had they been successful, they would have come out under a catwalk, out of sight of tower guards.
